What is the Difference in TUSQ Materials?

TUSQ

TUSQ nuts have a rich tone without the inconsistency found in ivory, bone, and other natural materials. Bone and ivory have hard and soft spots (grain) throughout each piece, hampering the consistent transfer of vibrations to the guitar top. TUSQ nuts are designed to transfer the right frequencies more efficiently from the string to the guitar body.

Best for Acoustic Guitars.

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL

TUSQ XL and Black TUSQ XL nuts are designed to boost guitar tone and performance. These precision-engineered nuts are made with a specially formulated material that couples the strings' vibrations to the neck and brings out the hidden harmonics and richness in every note. It is based on the highly resonant TUSQ man-made ivory but is permanently lubricated to improve the tuning performance of the guitar.

Best for Electric Guitars and BASS.

    Great but I need help

The item is great, however I haven't tried it out. I installed a slotted nut of the same type but there were two grooves at the end that didn't line up well on my Jackson (7 string fanned nut). I used a tool to cut new grooves in but one of them was slightly off, leading to a constantly bent note in my 2nd string when played open. My finger seems to push the string in its correct place when playing a chord that uses the first fret so I just avoid playing open chords on that string, and I'm fine. It only bothers me because I know it's there. So sadly, the slotted multiscaled black tusq nut doesn't fit well on a dinky but I'm sure it fits great on most brands. As for the blank, (which this review is actually for) I found it easy to cut grooves in a nut which had grooves in it already to follow but I have not yet figured out how to get them cut into my blank nut having no prior grooves to follow for alignment.

So my review is that the product is made well, but unless you have a way to align the nut correctly while cutting I to it and have a trustworthy schematic for which to place the grooves don't expect to have an easy time making clean grooves that allow your strings to sit well in place and stay in tune.

The two grooves I had to cut on my own... those strings are always out of tune after a day goes by.
